On May 22, organizations from across the state converged in Dover for “Delaware’s Day for Housing 2025,” advocating for solutions to our housing crisis, with the goal to ensure that everyone in our state has a safe, affordable place to live and thrive.
Our challenges in the housing realm range from homelessness to a severe shortage of affordable rental homes. These challenges occur on a continuum of needs from community-level conditions -- enough safe, affordable, stable housing -- to urgent services for individuals and families experiencing a housing crisis.
Addressing the crises is necessary, but not sufficient. In order to support a Delaware where everyone has the opportunity to thrive, we must invest in addressing the root causes of the housing crisis recommended by the Affordable Housing Production Task Force including increasing housing production by streamlining the permitting processes, reforming local zoning laws, and significantly increasing investment in affordable housing.
“Delaware’s Day for Housing” brings attention to the problem for a day, but 364 more days of attention are needed. Residents and nonprofits can do little to improve this problem without the help of our local and state governments. We call on our legislators to stand with us, listen to communities and residents with lived experience, and work to address the issues that make housing unreachable for many Delawareans.
We thank the Housing Alliance of Delaware for their leadership in housing policy advocacy, enabling more organizations and citizens to raise their voices and call for change together.
